What happened on 19 May

ECDC issued its 19 May surveillance update incorporating the Canadian confirmed case from 18 May, raising the cluster total to 12 cases comprising 9 confirmed, 2 probable, and 1 inconclusive. No new deaths since the previous update. ECDC noted that the identification of additional cases after passengers and crew return home is expected given the long Andes virus incubation period of up to six weeks. The risk to the EU/EEA general population remains assessed as very low.

MV Hondius disinfection at Rotterdam continued into a second day, with port authorities estimating completion by 21 May. The CDC reiterated zero confirmed Andes hantavirus cases in the United States. The 18 American passengers in Nebraska biocontainment requested to remain at the National Quarantine Unit through 31 May, reaching the 21-day point in their monitoring period; the CDC approved the request. Two additional Americans previously at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta were transferred to Nebraska following medical clearance.
