What happened on 13 May

The World Health Organization published Disease Outbreak News number 601 at 17:00 UTC, revising the cumulative cluster total to 11 cases comprising 8 confirmed, 1 inconclusive, and 2 probable, with 3 deaths unchanged. The update reflected two new confirmed cases announced over the preceding 24 hours by French and Spanish authorities, both repatriated passengers tested upon arrival. The French Ministry of Health additionally reported the female passenger whose deterioration was logged on 12 May had progressed to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, described by attending clinicians as the final stage of supportive care available.

ECDC simultaneously refreshed its Andes hantavirus outbreak surveillance page reflecting the same numerical update and reiterated that the EU/EEA general population risk remains very low. The European Centre also issued operational guidance addressing crew sanitation protocols on board the MV Hondius during the Atlantic transit to Rotterdam. No new deaths were reported. The inconclusive case category was introduced to accommodate one US-repatriated passenger whose initial laboratory result returned positive but required confirmatory retesting at Nebraska Public Health Lab.
